After leaving a BSC degree, Garon began pursuing his interests in film and commercials at AFDA where he graduated with Honours.
In 2010 he directed a heart-warming 26 minute film that won many awards alongside best student picture. The same film Umkhumbi Wethu ‘Our Ship’ has toured festivals globally winning best student film in 2011 at the Action/Cut Film Festival in Hollywood. The film also received a Jury Award in Seattle and won the Cine Golden Eagle award and an Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles International Film Festival.
Garon continues to create awareness around the poverty stricken ‘trolley pushers’ in his film Umkhumbi Wethu who struggle daily to survive off the streets of Johannesburg. He remains the only fourth year director to have won a SAFTA for his film as well as a Loerie for his student commercial.
Since graduating Garon has gone on to win numerous other awards including Best Director at the NYC Picturestart Film Festival and a nomination for ‘Best Young Director’ at Cannes.
Garon has wasted no time working his way into the mainstream industry and has already directed a number of commercials through Propeller Films. This talented young director is hitting the industry hard and fast in his determination to make a name for himself.
